Laminated bus bars are passive electronic components that distribute power in electronic equipment. They can lower costs and are a better alternative to round wire cable harnesses for a number of reasons. Laminated bus bars offer simpler assembly and are customized for ease of handling and installation. Round wire cable harnesses, though effective, take up space. Bus bar conductors save considerable space due to their size, shape and thickness. There is no need for cumbersome wires. The shape of the bus bar saves at least 50% of the space required by wire cables and a reduction in thickness saves even more space. Their compact design also allows for positive mounting and fixture add-ons/retrofits. Current carrying capability is not sacrificed. In fact, bus bars provide a higher current carrying capability with minimal voltage drop. This means the voltage drop becomes predictable so lowers costs when compensating for it. Low characteristic impedance, low inductance and high distributed capacitance creates reduced noise levels and reduced EMI/RFI. This superior grounding and shielding capability eliminates costs that would be required to add these elements to the wire cable harness. A bus bar's thin, wide construction results in better heat dissipation because of the increased surface area. A conductor has nearly 5½ times greater surface area than that of an inch long length of AWG "O" gauge wire. The benefits of laminated bus bars clearly outweigh that of wire cable harnesses. |
